2013 Year in Review

Every new year I take some time to reflect on the past year and take note of some of the major things that happened.

I do this for several reasons:

1) To keep a list for myself of things worth remembering
2) As sort of a "Christmas letter" to people I care about
3) To give myself perspective on my accomplishments and short comings to be learned from´╗┐

2013 detailed (in general order)
  • Wedding planning, wedding planning, and oh yea....wedding planning.
  • Spring in MD
    • Took L1 swimming lessons. - I did so well in the class, I was given a level 2 certificate and recommended for level 4.
    • 02/01/2013 - Had a day of perfect contentment.
    • Refinanced Judy's house. Life now cheaper.
    • Started swimming 3 days a week with Judy. - This was big for me. I've never actually learned how to swim and I was always "just OK" at it. I've also never felt comfortable in pool locker rooms. Both of those fears are now gone.
    • Worked on some cool data visualization projects.
    • Almost took another metalworking class, but it got cancelled :(
    • Found new dentist and eye doctor in MD
    • Attended some good weddings. (Special shout out to my buddy Andrew's wedding to Mia.)
    • Started dabbling in Rock Climbing, enabled by my friend +Mark. Challenging my fear of heights.
  • With government sequestration threatening, I took the opportunity to quit my job, move to the West Village in NYC, and begin working with a tech startup called Socure as employee #1. Yea....big step...and all while in the middle of wedding planning. That's "opportunity" for ya.
  • First time writing code on OSX. (Between that and my Linux skills, not sure if I ever want to go back to Windows.)
  • Judy and I joined citibike and began biking every other day on the mean streets of NYC. I learned a lot of new biking skills, let me tell you.
  • Began growing a beard....just because.
  • High school reunion in Old City Philly.
    • "Wow, of all the guys in Mrs. Murphy's class, you were the LAST one I expected to actually go into Software Engineering." - Shall remain anonymous :)
  • MD Eastern Shore mini-vacation and wedding.
    • One of the red wines for St. Michael's Winery exploded in our apartment. When we came home it looked like a murder scene. Luckily it was before we did the "move-in deep clean" and they sent us 2 new bottles.
  • Briefly rented our MD house to my good friend +Chris. Best tenant ever!
  • My buddy +Rob gave up a tour of Google's NYC offices.
  • Started hosted several friends and family members in NYC. (My cousin Robby visiting for SantaCon)
  • Wedding Stuff
    • Lost 10 lbs for the wedding.
    • Designed our wedding bands, finishing the inter-lock design I came up with. (future blog post)
    • My best man +Andrew had us make homemade fireworks for the bachelor party. So much fun!
  • HGP career day - talking about all of my experiences with high school Juniors and Seniors.
  • Trip to San Francisco for a reunion with Judy's family.
    • Learned how to play Mahjong
    • Got a tour of Apple's campus from our friend +Karthik S
  • Got Married!! 10/19/2014 was a great day of celebration with +Judy!
  • Honeymoon in Dominica.
    • Kayaking, Paddle boarding, long hikes.
    • Learned how to scuba dive and speared 3 lion fish on my first dive.
  • I think I gained all the weight back :( Something to fix in 2014!!!
    Summary

There were a couple of things I had been talking about for a couple of years that final got accomplished in 2013. As 2014 begins, I find myself with a sense of accomplishment, a clean slate, and a partner to tackle this next chapter with.

    Predictions for 2014
    • Help Socure close our Series-A and take the company to the next level.
    • Probably sell the Prius since we don't need 2 cars living in NYC.
    • West Village is expensive, so probably move somewhere cheaper in NY after the lease is up in May.
    • Start consolidating and simplifying some things Judy and I have that no longer need to be separate.
    • I'll stress the word simplify, as 2014 is likely to be a more relaxed year in preparation for things Judy and I want to accomplish in 2015.
    Happy holidays,
    Ed
